Unpiggable Pipeline Solutions

Following the success of the Forums in 2011 and 2013, our 2015 Forum continues with the objective of addressing capabilities and guidance concerning tools for corrosion and mechanical damage inspection of ‘unpiggable’ oil, gas and hazardous liquids pipelines. The focus will be on the capabilities of existing technologies as well as those in research and development.

Advances and best practices in above-ground remote assessments, externally mounted assessment tools such as guided-wave or MFL, and combinations with DA methodologies will form a significant part of the program. Live-line access techniques, combined with low-flow restriction robotic and wire-line-powered internal inspection tools – and new free-swimming tools for challenging configurations – will also be a special focus, especially for pipeline segments that cannot be taken out of service when there is a need for reliable integrity inspections.

Additionally, invited presentations will cover new techniques and tools such as bio-inspired acoustics for internal pipeline imaging (BioSonar), subsea CT scanners for external inspection through coating, and “smart beads” that detect corrosion and heal cracks.

Tools and practices for pre-inspection surveys and preparing lines for inspection, including cleaning, will be of particular interest, as will tools that can negotiate unknown pipe geometry and other unexpected obstructions.

  • The organizers invite presentations covering recent experiences and successes with “unpiggable” tools that are currently available and in use, as well as reports on promising R&D in this field.
  • The time available for individual presentations will be 25 minutes, with five additional minutes for discussion. The program is envisaged as comprising three sessions and a total of 15 to 20 presentations, with a round-table open forum discussion to conclude the proceedings.
