Defect Assessment in Pipelines

Professor Phil Hopkins has more than 26 years’ experience in pipeline engineering, and is Technical Director with Penspen Integrity and Visiting Professor of Engineering at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He has worked with most of the major oil and gas companies and pipeline companies around the world, providing consultancy on management, business, design, maintenance, inspection, risk analysis and safety, and failure investigations. He is the past-chairman of the Executive Committee of the ASME Pipeline Systems Division and has served on many other professional committees, including the British Standards Institution, European Pipeline Research Group, the American Gas Association’s Pipeline Research Committee, and the DNV Pipeline Committee. More than 1700 engineers and technical personnel around the world have attended his Pipeline Defect Assessment and Pipeline Integrity-related courses.

Pigging & In-line Inspection

Dr. Tom Bubenik is Director of Integrity Solutions at DNV Columbus (formerly CC Technologies). He has more than 20 years of experience in pipeline integrity assessments, in-line inspection tools and their capabilities, direct assessment techniques and methodologies, field data collection, and the impact of defects and inspection on pipeline operations and maintenance. Dr. Bubenik's research experience covers inspection technologies for pipelines, analysis tools for corroded and damaged pipelines, and repair techniques for pipelines. He also has extensive experience related to in-line inspection of natural gas pipelines including design and operation of inspection vehicles and analysis and interpretation of inspection data.

Alasdair Clyne is a consultant with DNV Energy (formerly CC Technologies) in Calgary. He is mainly involved in work associated with in-line inspection and integrity issues for clients based primarily in Canada and Latin America. Alasdair worked for British Gas R&D from 1980 through 1994, when he joined Pipeline Integrity International. He joined DNV/CCT after working in the UK, Argentina and Houston. Alasdair graduated in metallurgy from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and is a Senior Member of The Welding Institute and a UK Chartered engineer and a registered APEGGA engineer within Alberta.

Jeff Fleming is an ILI Coordinator with TransCanada Pipelines. He is responsible for the execution of ILI projects which encompass all aspects of pigging from utility tools to smart tools. Prior to joining TransCanada Jeff spent five years with BJ Pipeline Inspection Services heading up the group responsible for the fitness-for-purpose evaluation of ILI tool data.

George Williamson has over 22 years of Operations, maintenance and Integrity Management experience. He is a registered professional engineer, NACE certified corrosion and cathodic protection specialist, and certified pipeline integrity specialist.

Pipeline Integrity Management

Dr. Alan Murray recently retired from the position of Chief Engineer at the Canadian National Energy Board having previously held a number of senior management positions with a large pipeline operating company in North America with responsibility for system planning, construction, maintenance and contracting functions. His 40 years of work experience spans research, regulation, third-party assessment, design and development in pipelines and offshore structures. He was the founding chairman of the ASME Pipeline Systems Division and is the co-author of the ASME Press text books Pipeline Design and Construction – A Practical Approach and Pipeline Integrity Assurance. He has published over 60 papers on a variety of engineering topics. Alan is an adjunct professor at the University of Calgary and has given courses on Pipeline Design and Construction throughout the world. A mechanical engineer by training, he holds a doctorate in Civil Engineering from the Queen's University of Belfast and is a Fellow of the ASME.

Pipeline Risk Management

WKM Consultancy specializes in pipeline design, construction, operations and management with over 20 years experience specific to pipeline risk management and integrity management. Since it's inception in 1994, WKM has been an advisor to government regulatory agencies and academia as well as the primary consultant in numerous pipeline technical projects for more than 50 clients, including many major U.S. and international pipeline operating companies.

Instructor W. Kent Muhlbauer, is a principal of WKM and is the author of the widely respected reference book Pipeline Risk Management Manual which is part of the course material. Prior to forming WKM, Kent worked in all phases of engineering, operations, and management of natural gas and hazardous liquids pipelines while with Dow Pipeline Company.
