Excavation Inspection & Applied NDE for ILI/DA Validation and Correlation
|February 11, 2008

|February 12, 2008
The course is designed around the critical step of “Excavation Inspection and Documentation,” which has recently been termed the 3rd step in Direct Assessment. The focus will be on the validation and correlation of both ILI results
and/or Direct Assessment techniques through non- destructive testing in the excavation.
"The pig is wrong" is not often the case, and “No anomalies found” is not enough information.
On completion of the course, participants will have a solid understanding of the minimum requirements to ensure maximum correlation with ILI and Direct assessment results during an excavation program. In addition, each participant will walk away
with a general understanding of the available technology and procedures to implement contracts, increase quality, and reduce overall project costs.
Who should attend
The course is specifically designed for project managers, engineers and technical personnel responsible for the management, implementation and reporting of pipeline integrity inspection activities.
Jim Marr is President of Marr Associates Pipeline Integrity Ltd. Marr Associates has been in the pipeline integrity business since 1992. For the last eight years he was the SCC Program Planning Manager for TransCanada Pipelines. Jim has worked in pipeline integrity for the past 30 years, focusing on SCC, external corrosion, direct assessment, direct examination, ILI development and correlation, data management and integration and the characterization of the environment around the pipeline. He graduated with a degree in earth sciences in 1986 from the University of Guelph, Ontario. He is a member of NACE and a past vice-chair of the NACE SCCDA committee.
James Pennie is an advanced NDT consultant with Eclipse Scientific Inc. With offices in Waterloo, Ontario and Edmonton, Alberta, Eclipse Scientific develops specialized products and techniques for the NDT industry, specifically in the advanced ultrasonic (UT) discipline. James has been in the Non Destructive Testing industry for 10 years, and has spent that time working within pipeline integrity field, with his initial involvement working with Marr Associates. While at Marr Associates as a project manager, James was responsible for field activities which included SCCDA, ECDA, ICDA, and ILI correlation programs. James now provides Advanced UT Expertise to clients worldwide, to assist with implementation of new technologies, training of personnel, and procedure and technique development for both the onshore and offshore industry.
Rick Desaulniers is currently Director, Customer Solutions, with ENTEGRA in Concord, Ontario. He has been involved in the pipeline industry for the past 27 years with the majority of the time spent in the Data Interpretation Department analyzing 1000’s of miles of pipelines around the world. He has been involved in past NACE conference as Chairman of the Pipeline Integrity Symposium and presented/co-write papers on Excavation Data Collection and Data Analyst Qualification Processes. He was on the Standards Development Committee for ANSI/ASNT ILI-PQ-2005 In-Line Inspection Personnel Qualification and Certification Standard. He received his Bachelor of Science in Geology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
Comprehensive course notes as well as reference material will be provided, a valuable guide for future applications.
