Defect Assesment in Pipelines

  • Professor Phil Hopkins has more than 26 years’ experience in pipeline engineering, and is Technical Director with Penspen Integrity and Visiting Professor of Engineering at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He has worked with most of the major oil and gas companies and pipeline companies around the world, providing consultancy on management, business, design, maintenance, inspection, risk analysis and safety, and failure investigations. He is the immediate past-chairman of the Executive Committee of the ASME Pipeline Systems Division and has served on many other professional committees, including the British Standards Institution, European Pipeline Research Group, the American Gas Association’s Pipeline Research Committee, and the DNV Pipeline Committee. More than 1700 engineers and technical personnel around the world have attended his Pipeline Defect Assessment and Pipeline Integrity-related courses.

DOT Pipeline Safety Regulations

  • George Williamson has over 22 years of Operations, maintenance and Integrity Management experience. He is a registered professional engineer, NACE certified corrosion and cathodic protection specialist, and certified pipeline integrity specialist.

  • David E. Bull, ARM, is well known throughout the gas industry for outstanding training programs, development of the odorization audit and expertise in regulatory compliance and evaluating damage prevention programs. His experience includes risk assessments for over 75 gas utilities for AEGIS Insurance Services, membership on the Damage Prevention Quality Action Team (Dig Safely) and as a staff member at the Transportation Safety Institute, Pipeline Division. David has over 28 years experience helping pipeline operators to assess and manage their risk and liability exposures. Mr. Bull is also a principal in ViaData LP, publishers of WinD.O.T., The Pipeline Safety Encyclopedia.

Introduction to Excavation Inspection & Applied NDE for Pipeline Integrity Assessment

  • Jim Marr is currently SCC Program Manager for TransCanada Pipelines. Previously, he was president of the pipeline consulting firm Marr Associates.  He founded the original company in 1992 and was its president until late December 2002. In 2006, with the reforming of Marr Associates, two additional companies were developed to maintain Marr Associates’ tradition of providing comprehensive pipeline integrity field services such as modeling, direct examination, and project management. Jim has worked in pipeline integrity for the past 20 years, focusing on SCC, external corrosion, direct assessment, direct examination, ILI development and correlation, data management, and the characterization of the environment around the pipe. He has published numerous papers related to SCC, investigative procedures, and environmental relationships related to time-dependent pipeline threats. He graduated with a degree in earth sciences in 1986 from the University of Guelph, Ontario.  He is a member of NACE and a past vice-chair of the NACE SCCDA committee.

  • Rick Desaulniers is currently Line Product Manager (Analysis) with Baker Hughes Management Group.  He has been involved in the pipeline industry for the past 20 years in the Data Interpretation Department analyzing 1000’s of miles of pipelines around the world, specifically in Magnetic Flux Leakage type tools.  He has been involved in past NACE conference as Chairman of the Pipeline Integrity Symposium and presented/co-write papers on Excavation Data Collection and Data Analyst Qualification Processes.  He was on the Standards Development Committee for ANSI/ASNT ILI-PQ-2005 In-Line Inspection Personnel Qualification and Certification Standard.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Geology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

  • Dr. Neb Uzelac is vice president with NDT Systems & Services (America). He has more than 20 years' experience in in-line inspection, specializing in ultrasonic methods and crack detection, and the application of NDE techniques for internal pipeline inspection. As a member of NACE, Dr. Uzelac is chairman of the Task Group currently revising NACE TR 35100, In-Line Non-destructive Inspection of Pipelines. He is also a member of the task group that prepared the NACE Standard RP0102-2002, and he is chairman of the NACE Technology Exchange Group TEG 267X for In-line Inspection of Pipelines. He was also a member of API's work groups that created API standards 1160 and 1163 (ILI performance standard).

Performing Pipeline Rehabilitation

  • Sidney A Taylor is president of Incal Pipeline Rehabilitation, Inc. He has over 30 years' experience in the design and development of automated high-pressure water jet cleaning and coating systems. Prior to Incal, Sid worked with Schlumberger as a designer and manufacturer of well-logging tools and equipment, with MW Kellogg as a senior regulatory attorney, with Weatherford as general manager of water jetting systems, and with CRC-Evans as vice-president, engineering and marketing, where he was responsible for engineering design, manufacturing, and world-wide marketing of pipeline rehabilitation systems.

Pigging & Inline Inspection

  • Dr. Tom Bubenik is Director of Integrity Solutions at DNV Columbus (formerly CC Technologies). He has more than 20 years of experience in pipeline integrity assessments, in-line inspection tools and their capabilities, direct assessment techniques and methodologies, field data collection, and the impact of defects and inspection on pipeline operations and maintenance. Dr. Bubenik's research experience covers inspection technologies for pipelines, analysis tools for corroded and damaged pipelines, and repair techniques for pipelines. He also has extensive experience related to in-line inspection of natural gas pipelines including design and operation of inspection vehicles and analysis and interpretation of inspection data.

  • Mark Olson is Principal Engineer at DNV Columbus (formerly CC Technologies). He has over 20 years’ experience in pipeline integrity and inspection. Mark was one of the founders and also a president of PEI Pipeline Services, as well as a founder of Cornerstone Pipeline Inspection Group (CPIG), and Inspection Services manager for Baker Hughes PMG. Prior to entering the pipeline services field Mark spent  15 years working in pipeline design, maintenance, operation, and integrity for Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Marathon.

  • Gary Smith is president of Inline Services, a Houston-based company specializing in pigging equipment and services. He has 27 years experience in the pipeline pigging industry, working in services such as commissioning and maintenance of pipelines as well as with designing and manufacturing pigging equipment.

Pipeline Repair Methods/In-Service Welding

  • Bill Bruce is director of welding technology with DNV Columbus (formerly CC Technologies). Prior to joining CCT, he was a technology leader at Edison Welding Institute and a senior engineer at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. He is a member of the American Petroleum Institute API 1104 Committee and is the chairman of the Maintenance Welding Subcommittee.
  • Dr. Chris Alexander is a Principal at Stress Engineering Services, Inc. In terms of pipeline work, He has been integrally involved in assessing the effects of dents and mechanical damage on the structural integrity of pipelines. These efforts have involved full-scale burst and cyclic pressure fatigue testing, as well as modeling dents using finite element analysis. Dr. Alexander has also been involved in assessing the use of composites in repairing pipelines and offshore risers. He has published more than 50 technical papers and has made international presentations on a wide range of topics. He has received B.S. M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Pipeline Risk Management

  • WKM Consultancy specializes in pipeline design, construction, operations and management with over 20 years experience specific to pipeline risk management and integrity management. Since it's inception in 1994, WKM has been an advisor to government regulatory agencies and academia as well as the primary consultant in numerous pipeline technical projects for more than 50 clients, including many major U.S. and international pipeline operating companies.

    Instructor W. Kent Muhlbauer, is a principal of WKM and is the author of the widely respected reference book Pipeline Risk Management Manual which is part of the course material. Prior to forming WKM, Kent worked in all phases of engineering, operations, and management of natural gas and hazardous liquids pipelines while with Dow Pipeline Company.
