Pipeline Integrity Regulations Driving Technology Development
by Larry Payne and Chuck Harris
The OPS regulations require pipeline operators to perform pipeline assessments to prove pipeline integrity. This has created the need for new or improved inline inspection tools. These tools must be more exact and definitive in the data retrieved and processed. In the past, geometry tools were developed to find anomalies in the form of large dents or buckles. Today the regulations require dent anomalies sized at .250 inches or greater that are positioned in the top quadrant of the pipe be investigated and repaired under certain conditions. Pipeline operators need a better definition of anomalies to avoid costly digs and repairs. Therefore, new technology has appeared in dent detection with the introduction of “Deformation Tools”. Metal loss technology has also become greatly improved with use on “hall effect” sensors, the increase in sensors, and the increase in data storage and processing capability. This paper will introduce some of the new and improved technologies available to meet the operator’s needs.
