Case Study: Lessons Learned During In-Line Inspection of a Pipeline Containing Bell-and-Spigot Joints, Chill Rings, and Miter Bends
by Frank A Dauby, Jr, PGE, Walnut Creek, CA, USA, and Eric C Quick, Tuboscope Pipeline Services, Houston, TX, USA
A natural gas transmission pipeline owner recently concluded the in-line inspection of line located in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, California. The pipeline is approximately 25.7 miles of 24 inch O.D., with wall thickness of 0.281 inch to 0.562 inch, API-5L, Grades B, X-42, X-52, and X-60. The pipeline was constructed from random mill lengths and was field welded using shielded metal arc welding. Along with
1.5D radius forged elbows, this pipeline contains many appurtenances such as miter bends, chill rings and bell and spigot joints that render the In-Line Inspection of this line challenging. This case study will discuss the methods used and lessons learned throughout a two year effort to successfully traverse this pipeline with an in line inspection tool.
